Horses love Spanish Moss

Despite its name, Spanish Moss is a member of the bromeliad family, related to pineapples rather than moss! Spanish Moss is an epiphyte – it grows on trees but takes nutrients and moisture from the air around it. It does not harm the trees on which it grows.

It flowers in spring with tiny yellow blooms. It grows all over our property, and our horses love to snack on it. As a treat, they even prefer it to carrots and apples. Next time you’re out horseback riding, pull some down and feed it to your horse – they’ll appreciate it!
